In Como, Italy, a family of artisans keeps the traditions of hand silk screening alive. Engravers transform original artworks commissioned by Moutonière from contemporary painters into a series of screens, one per color. Blenders mix dyes to replicate the shades and tones of the original painting. Then pressers apply the colors to the screens on top of fine silk twill, one by one, often more than a dozen screens, to recreate the painting on silk. Finally, the edges of each silk scarf and hand rolled and the numbered, limited edition Moutonière triangle label is affixed to the inside corner.

When we first linked-in with Cesare, they did not believe we really wanted to hand screen print every scarf, including the ribbons — as the rest of the industry has gone to digital. Preserving this craft and making it accessible to you is exactly what we stand for at Moutonière.

✧ F/W 2024: Silk Art Scarves

Silk art scarves were our original collection, first released for F/W 2024 and launched in Paris during fashion week. We love scarves because they exemplify the combination of art and craftsmanship that motivated us to found Moutonière.

Each art is an opportunity for a mid-career contemporary artist to gain exposure and see an original work, newly commissioned by Moutonière, realized in a new medium. Each scarf demonstrates all the artisan details that recall the world before digital printing and factory sewing. And, for the patron, silk art scarves are truly wearable art, equally beautiful around the neck, as a top, as a belt, as a skirt, on a bag, on a dog, or paired with beautiful necklaces or scarf rings from the Fine Metals & Gems collection.
